Saul Alvarez promoter Oscar De La Hoya and Golovkin’s Tom Loeffler confirmed on Wednesday that they have reached an agreement after eight months of negotiations.
According to both promoters Alvarez and Golovkin will face each other on May 5, in a rematch. However, they are still yet to find a right place for this mega fight in 2018.
“Canelo fights Golovkin 2 will be boxing’s biggest and best event of 2018 as these two elite fighters once again go ahead-to-head to determine who is the best middleweight champion in the world.” De La Hoya said.
“I expect we will see even more fireworks in the rematch as both fighters know there more is at stake than before.” former middleweight champion added.
Speaking to media, Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) admitted that he was much happy to accept the rematch with Alvarez although he did not with last duel decision.
“I’m ready to fight Canelo and I’m glad he accepted that fight again. This is the fight everyone wants. This is the fight that boxing deserves.” Golovkin said.
“I didn’t agree with the decision of some judges in the first fight, but this time there will be no doubt. I’m going out of the ring as a middleweight champion.” Golovkin added.
In one of the most anticipated duels of 2017, Golovkin and Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) had fought on 16 September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, USA.
Kazakh icon Golovkin had then defended his WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight titles for a 19th time, but was not winning. He had rather had to settle for a controversial null verdict.

Judge Adalaide Byrd had a dubious 118-110 scorecard in favor of Alvarez, while his colleague Dave Moretti had voted in favor of Golovkin (115-113) and the third and final judge, Don Trella, had seen the two boxers back to back 114-114.
“I’m excited about participating in one of the most important boxing events in history.” Alvarez told media when asked about his chances in next rematch with Golovkin.
“This second fight will be for the benefit and pleasure of all fans who deserve to see the best against the best. This time, Golovkin will have no excuse for the judges because I’m going to pass him the KO.” Alvarez added.
