AS Roma were only able to draw 1-1 when facing Genoa in the 2024/2025 Serie A match giornata 4 held at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, Sunday (15/9/2024).
Roma took the lead through a goal scored by Artem Dovbyk in the first half. Genoa equalized in the final minutes of the match through Koni de Winter’s action.
Thanks to this result, Genoa is now ranked ninth in the standings with 5 points. On the other hand, Roma is still winless this season and is now left in 15th place with 3 points.
There were not many opportunities created by both teams at the start of the first half. Roma struggled to show their best performance despite fielding a number of star players.
The match started with Genoa playing aggressively. The hosts tried to pressure Roma in the early minutes with several dangerous attacks. In the fourth minute, Genoa already got their first corner kick after their intense pressure.
Roma seemed to have difficulty controlling the ball at the start of the match, while Genoa continued to dominate with possession. However, after about 15 minutes, Roma began to rise and take control of the match.
Paulo Dybala, who led the front line, created a dangerous opportunity in the 22nd minute through a free kick directed at Ndicka, although the Roma defender’s header was still wide.
In the 37th minute, Roma scored a goal through Dovbyk who took advantage of the rebound ball. This goal was initially disallowed, but was then confirmed after going through a fairly long review process by VAR.
This goal was the result of Dovbyk’s sharpness who received the ball well and executed it calmly into Genoa’s goal. The first half ended with Roma leading 1-0, after Genoa failed to take advantage of several golden opportunities.
Genoa started the second half with several substitutions to increase their attacking power. Malinovskiy and Vitor Oliveira came on to replace Thorsby and Vogliacco. These changes immediately had an impact, as Genoa appeared more dominant in possession at the start of the second half.
In the 60th minute, Genoa almost equalized when Caleb Ekuban managed to penetrate into Roma’s penalty box. However, Roma’s goalkeeper, Mile Svilar, performed brilliantly by making a crucial save that thwarted Genoa’s efforts.
Roma also began to make several substitutions to maintain the tempo of the game. In the 62nd minute, De Rossi brought on Zeki Çelik, Baldanzi, and Pellegrini, replacing Dybala, El Sharaawy, and Pisilli. These substitutions were made in response to Genoa’s increasingly threatening dominance.
Genoa’s pressure continued until the 67th minute, when Malinovskiy took a free kick that went to the center, but Svilar again performed brilliantly by catching the ball without giving it a chance to rebound. Genoa pushed hard for an equalizer, but they struggled to break through Roma’s solid defense.
In the 69th minute, Genoa’s Koni de Winter was booked for a high challenge, adding to the frustration for the home side.
Despite Genoa’s continued pressure, AS Roma managed to hold their own towards the end of the match. Eldor Shomurodov came on for Dovbyk in the 80th minute, bringing new energy to Roma’s front line to hold the ball longer and stifle Genoa’s attacks.
Genoa kept trying until the final minutes of the match and finally got a goal back. Koni de Winter met Vitinha’s pass in the 96th minute to equalize and make it a dramatic 1-1 draw.
