It is nothing new in the world of sports, especially football, for former players to be involved in a managerial position of a club, even as the owner of the club itself.
David Beckham owns Inter Miami club that competes in MLS, Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima has just officially become the owner of a football club by completing the purchase of shares in Spanish club Real Valladolid who competed in La Liga.
As well as the first, there were six former Manchester United players who joined Clash of ’92 namely Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt and David Beckham who owned 60% of Salford City shares.
As if not to be outdone, Gerard Pique also has a club that was acquired through the Kosmos Holding Group, namely FC Andorra whose purchase was completed in December 2018.
FC Andorra itself was founded in 1942, a football club originating from the country of Andorra located between the borders of France and Spain. FC Andorra has competed in the Spanish league system since 1948, just like Monaco with the French League. Andorra FC itself is on the fifth level in the composition of Spanish football.
FC Andorra is currently headquartered in a stadium called Estadi Prada de Moles with a capacity to accommodate audience of only 530 seats.
The dream of Pique when buying FC Andorra is only one, namely to hear the Champions League theme song reverberating at the club headquarters they have.
When taking ownership of FC Andorra, the club is in debt bondage and is only one point above the relegation gap and 17 points below the top of the table. Pique’s first step was to make FC Andorra a duplicate of Barcelona by appointing Gabri Garcia as manager and Albert Jorquera as assistant manager.
Gabri spent 13 years defending Barcelona from junior level and participating in winning the Champions League title in the 2005/06 season. Gabri is also the coach of the Barca youth team and had time to train FC Sion in Switzerland. While Jorquera also defended Barcelona from junior level to senior level for more than 16 years and was part of the team when they won the Champions League title in the 2005/06 and 2008/09 seasons.
Despite playing in the fifth caste in the composition of the Spanish league competition, FC Andorra is reinforced by some Andorra national team players and currently some graduates of the Barcelona academy, La Masia, play there such as Marti Riverola, Fede Bessone and son of the late Tito Vilanova, Adria Vilanova.
Even Bessone and Riverola played with Pique and Messi in the Barcelona youth team.
Pique looks at Salford City for example. Since being owned by Ryan Giggs, Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and David Beckham, Salford City has managed promotions four times in five years and currently plays in the National League or the fifth level in the composition of English football.
And FC Andorra is heading in the same direction as promotion in the first year when Pique took over the team. Next season FC Andorra will play in the Tercera Division or fourth caste in the Spanish league arrangement and for the first time after 24 years, will return to play in the Copa del Rey.
