Chelsea once again suffered defeat in the domestic league when losing 0-2 to Manchester City in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
City forward Riyad Mahrez’s excellent free-kick opened the scoring early in the second half before Julian Alvarez doubled the Citizens’ lead five minutes later with a Erling Halaand finish.
This is Chelsea’s second consecutive defeat. Last weekend, they lost to Arsenal 0-1 right at Stamford Bridge. If counting the domestic league alone, Chelsea have lost 3 consecutive matches and have not won in the last 5 matches.
After their loss, Chelsea head coach Graham Potter is still very confident and thinks his players have had a positive performance.
“I thought there were quite a few positives. Obviously, we’re disappointed with the result but in terms of how we played, we created some good chances, there was a better structure and performance level.” Potter said.
“The team looked closer to what we want it to look like [compared to Arsenal]. The boys had great courage and they tried against a top team.”
“Their goalkeeper got man of the match and I think that tells a little bit of the story. But overall, I think it was a step forward for us.” Potter added.
Potter also heaped praise to 18-year-old talent Lewis Hall. The manager has insisted there was ‘a lot to like’ from Chelsea’s performance as they crashed out against City.
“I really enjoyed Lewis Hall’s performance. He takes responsibility, dribbles in tight areas, attacks the box, and can score a few goals on a luckier day. He’s played a lot more mature than his age.” Potter said.
Chelsea will have to be a guest of Newcastle United in the next match. This will be another tough match for Potter’s side, because Newcastle are in very high form at the moment.
