Guardiola Extends Bad Record in Champions League

Manchester City failed to reach the 2021-2022 Champions League final. This minor result makes Man City coach, Josep Guardiola, extend his bad record in the Champions League.

Playing at the Santiago Bernabeu, Thursday (5/5/2022), The Citizens – the nickname of Man City – failed to maintain a 4-3 advantage in the semifinals. They were rolled 1-3 by Real Madrid which made Karim Benzema and colleagues secure victory with a 6-5 aggregate score.

Reporting from Twitter @OptaJoe, Thursday (5/5/2022), this is Guardiola’s sixth defeat in the Champions League semi finals. This record makes him equal Jose Mourinho’s poor record as the coach who has lost the most semi-finals in the history of the competition.

However, this is the first time the Spanish tactician has lost in the Champions League semifinals with Man City. In fact, last season, he managed to bring Kevin De Bruyne et al to the top party before finally being overthrown by Chelsea.

Previously, the 51-year-old entrenador had lost twice in the same phase with Barcelona. Precisely in the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 seasons.

Then, while in charge of Bayern Munich, Guardiola was knocked out of the Champions League three times. The failure was obtained in the 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016 seasons.

In fact, in the second leg match against Los Blancos – the nickname of Madrid – the victory was almost secured by Man City. Unfortunately, in the 90th and 90+1th minutes, Rodrygo Goes managed to reverse the score to 2-1, which replied to Riyad Mahrez’s goal in the 73rd minute.

Then, in extra time, Karim Benzema’s penalty crushed the dreams of the Manchester Blue squad to play in the Champions League final two seasons in a row.

In contrast to Guardiola, Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti, actually made a sweet note of the victory. Don Carlo-Ancelotti’s nickname- is the coach who has reached the most Champions League finals, five times.

In the final, Los Blancos will face Liverpool, who got rid of Villarreal in the semifinals. The final match will be held on Sunday 29 May 2022 at the Stade de France Stadium, Paris, France.
