Guardiola on comeback: Real Madrid give advice over the phone

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola joked that he had called Real Madrid to ask how to make a comeback in the game.

Man City made an extraordinary comeback against Aston Villa to lock up the 2021/2022 Premier League title.

In the match to determine the Premier League title, The Citizens were two goals behind Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium, Sunday (22/5).

Aston Villa opened the scoring in the 37th minute through Matty Cash’s goal. Then the visitors again widened the advantage to 2-0 through a goal in Philippe Coutinho in the 69th minute.

However, thanks to the extraordinary struggle, Man City were able to reverse the position to 3-2 through Ilkay Gundogan’s two goals in the 76th and 81st minutes, and a goal from Rodri in the 78th minute.

Responding to the dramatic victory, Guardiola joked that he knew how to make a comeback after calling Real Madrid.

“I called Real Madrid and they gave me good advice,” Guardiola said after the game, quoted by Marca.

But Guardiola’s comments are just a joke. According to him, there are some things in football that cannot be explained, including Man City’s comeback action against Aston Villa.

“There was no explanation about Madrid and no explanation today. Sometimes it’s nice to live in this situation. I feel this will help us to be stronger next season,” said Guardiola.

In May 2022, Guardiola said that Real Madrid have a tradition of being able to make comebacks and that has helped them qualify for the 2021/2022 Champions League final.

Real Madrid managed to advance to the Champions League final this season after winning on aggregate over Man City with a score of 6-5, thanks to an epic comeback in the semi-final second leg. In the first leg Real Madrid lost at the Etihad with a score of 3-4, but in the second leg Los Blancos won 3-1.

“It happened a lot in their history. They put a lot of players in the box, a lot of them crossed, and they scored two goals,” said Guardiola.
