Yvon Michel Group (GYM) confirmed on Wednesday their boxers Adonis Stevenson to fight Eleider Alvarez for the WBC light heavyweight title in December.
“The date will be confirmed when we can coordinate the date of Showtime with the availability of an amphitheater in Quebec,” posted GYM Stevenson’s promoter on his facebook account.
“Additionally, the WBC ordered a knockout bout between candidate #3 Marcus Brown and candidate #2 Oleksandr Gvozdyk to determine the mandatory contender next year.” he added.
American network Showtime on the other hand wanted to broadcast the fight on December or 16. It makes a sense before they face big holiday at the end of the year.
Stevenson (29-1, 24 KOs) won his last fight against Polish boxer Andrezj Fonfara (29-1-0, 24 KOs) last June. The Canadian boxer holds the WBC light heavyweight belt since June 2013 when he defeated Chad Dawson, By KO in the first round. The 40-year-old boxer has since defended his WBC title successfully eight times in beating so far.
On the other side, Alvarez is probably the best opponent for Stevenson since he has fought Dawson, so it’s pretty respectable match-up.
Alvarez (23-0, 11 KOs) is the mandatory contender for Stevenson for two years. If he had previously agreed to let Stevenson face other opponents, including Andrzej Fonfara in June, the Colombian boxer recently said he would not give up his place anymore.

The 33-year-old boxer recently beat Jean Pascal by a controversial decision after 12 rounds fight on June 3 in Montreal, Canada.
He won scores of 114-114, 116-112, and 117-111, this was a majority draw, however because one judge scored the fight poorly. BLH had it 117-111 and 118-110 for Alvarez.
Boxing analyst for TVA Sports, Bernanrd Barre predicted this fight will be interesting at the end of the year. He said both boxers have different styles when they fight in the rings.
“Eleider Alvarez has been waiting for his chance for two years. He worked hard. It’s going to be an electrifying battle,” Barre said on Wednesday.
“There will be a very interesting style confrontation. Stevenson is a left-handed boxer while Alvarez is right-handed. Stevenson has the striking force while Alvarez is a fine stylist. That’s the winning recipe for a good fight.” Barre added.
