Lewis Hamilton will open this season of Formula One racing with a brand new helmet in 2017 and for this, he’s invited his fans to come up with the design. The Mercedes driver recently wrote on his Instagram as he announced the competition. “Do you want to design my racing helmet for the upcoming F1 season?” “I’m on the lookout for a dope new layout that evolves my current theme and features the candy apple red in my existing design. I’ll be picking the design that I feel is the most stylish, inspiring, iconic and eye-catching.”
The creator of the winning design will have the chance to meet Hamilton at one of this season’s races where the three-time world champion will present them with a full-size signed replica helmet. Hamilton wishes his fans to get a fair chance to design this new helmet for him and this way he will pick the best design and even offer the fan a chance to meet him in person. Hamilton, the clear pre-season favorite following the surprise retirement of German team mate and world champion Nico Rosberg last month, has changed his helmet design several times over the years.
In his early days and at McLaren, he raced with a yellow helmet in tribute to his boyhood idol Ayrton Senna, the late Brazilian triple champion. That changed when he moved to Mercedes in 2013. Under Formula One’s regulations, a driver’s helmet design must be substantially the same for the entire season — to ensure drivers can be distinguished easily — but one special version is allowed at a race of his choosing. Testing starts at the end of February, while Mercedes are due to unveil the new car at Silverstone on Feb. 23 with the season starting in Australia on March 26.
The 31 years old Briton has 3.7 million Instagram followers, said he would meet the winning designer at one of the race tracks to hand over the prize of a full size signed replica. Now, it is time for fans to exhibit their designing skills and impress their favorite Formula One champion and then get a chance to spend some time as well as get recognition from him. This way it would be great to see Lewis Hamilton open the season with a brand new designed helmet and that too from one of his fans.
