How Juventus Overcame Ronaldo’s Departure: 8 Players for One CR7

Collectivity is Juventus’ weapon to close the productivity hole left by Cristiano Ronaldo. Eight players for one CR7. Losing Cristiano Ronaldo who decided to return to his old club, Man United, was a blow for Juventus in the transfer market last summer.

After Ronaldo left, Juventus was judged to lose about 30 goals. It’s not a baseless prediction considering that in three seasons defending Juve, CR7 has almost always been able to penetrate the limit of 30 goals per season. Ronaldo’s goals scored in all competitions during his time for Juventus were 28 (2018-2019), 37 (2019-2020), and 36 (2020-2021).

So how does coach Massimiliano Allegri deal with Ronaldo’s departure to Man United? Moise Kean’s re-signation from Everton is one way. On 31 August 2021, Kean Joined Juventus on a two-year loan with a fee of €7 million. However, the burden of being the team’s main goal scorer was not delegated by Allegri to one particular player.

The facts on the ground prove it. Since Ronaldo left, Juventus have looked more collective when it comes to scoring goals. After a dead end when they lost 0-1 against Empoli in the second week of the 2021-2022 Italian League, Juventus always scored in the following five matches.

As of this season, there have been 8 Juventus personnel who have scored. The details are, two goals were created by Paulo Dybala, Alvaro Morata, and Manuel Locatelli. Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa, Juan Cuadrado, Matthijs de Ligt, Moise Kean and Leonardo Bonucci each scored a goal.

The fact that pleases Allegri is that these names represent every line of play, namely back, center and front. This means that Allegri’s Juventus can now expect goals to come from anywhere. For example, Chiesa, who is most comfortable playing as a right winger, has been transformed into a striker.

According to Corriere dello Sport’s records, in a similar period last season, to be precise the seventh week of the 2020-2021 Serie A, only five Juve personnel were able to enter the scoreboard. A common phenomenon considering that last season Juventus still relied heavily on Ronaldo’s sharpness. Until the seventh week of the Italian League last season, CR7 had packed 6 goals, aka half of the team’s total goals (12).
