American Hudson Swafford won the 2020 Corales Championship for his second PGA Tour victory on Sunday in Punta Cana, in Dominican Republic
Leader by four strokes with a goal of 31 in the final round, the Floridian seemed to sail to an easy victory until he makes a double bogey on the 13th hole. Then, after a bogey on the 15th, he shared the command position with compatriot Tyler McCumber and with the Canadian Mackenzie Hughes.
A 6-iron flighted against the 210-yard par-3 17th set up a birdie that couldn’t have come at a better time, though. It moved him to 18 under and gave him control heading to the final hole.
Since there is nothing easy in life, he had to wedge a putt of the same length for the par on the last hole to confirm the victory.
“I still had a lot of self-confidence. I just kept going knowing that if I just focused on my pace my playing was going to be good.” Swafford said.
“Obviously a couple on the back nine that just burned the edges, but I putted great on the front, put great all week,” Swafford added.
Thanks to this triumph, Swafford no longer has to worry about his status for at least two seasons and will automatically receive invitations for the Tournament of Champions, the Players’ Championship, the Masters and the PGA Championship in 2021.
The PGA Tour is moving to Jackson, Mississippi this week for the presentation of the Sanderson Farms Championship.
The defending champion, Sebastian Munoz, will be present as will Adam Long with his new caddy, Quebecer Julien Trudeau. Among the registered players, Stewart Cink, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, Zach Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Sungjae Im, Scottie Scheffler as well as Canadians Corey Conners, David Hearn and Nick Taylor.
