Former Spanish League player, Matias Vargas, revealed that he was very impressed with Argentinian star, Lionel Messi. Matias Vargas had a career in LaLiga, the highest competition in the Spanish League, together with RCD Espanyol.
During his time at Espanyol, Matias Vargas had the opportunity to face Messi, who at that time was playing for Barcelona. The meeting between Messi and Matias Vargas occurred when Barcelona drew 2-2 with Espanyol in January 2020.
Matias Vargas then managed to get a Lionel Messi jersey after Barcelona’s match against Espanyol. The success of exchanging jerseys with Messi is a matter of pride for Matias Vargas.
Vargas even admitted that he had slept for about three months in a dirty Messi shirt in Barcelona. “I slept with a Messi jersey next to my pillow for two or three months, even though it was dirty,” said Vargas, quoted by Goal International.
“I played against him and we exchanged jerseys,” he continued. The player who is currently defending the Turkiye League with SH Port also had a disagreement with his mother because of Messi’s jersey. “My mother told me ‘Let me wash it’ said my mother,” explained Matias Vargil. “I told him (Matias Vargas) not to touch it (Messi’s jersey),” he continued to explain.
On 24 August 2022, Espanyol transferred Vargas to Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port for a fee of around £3.5 million. Last season for Shanghai Port, Vargas made 18 CSL appearances, scored one goal and provided seven assists. In Espanyol, he made 42 league appearances in total, providing four assists.
Moreover, Messi has left the luxury of European football after deciding to move to American club Inter Miami. Messi’s performance with Inter Miami was very good. He managed to contribute 11 goals and five assists for The Herons.
Apart from that, Messi was able to present the 2023 Leagues Cup trophy in his first season at Inter Miami. Messi’s presence not only has a positive impact on Inter Miami on the field, but also off the field. The reason is, Messi is able to attract many spectators to attend the stadium when Inter Miami plays a match.
