Johanna Konta’s investment at Wimbledon is in question in light of spine damage that constrained her to pull back from the Eastbourne International elimination rounds on Friday.
The seventh-positioned Konta had a hard fall close to the finish of her prevail upon top-positioned Angelique Kerber in the Eastbourne quarterfinals on Thursday. She was to play in the last four against Karolina Pliskova, who got a bye to Saturday’s last. Pliskova will confront Caroline Wozniacki for the title.
Johanna Konta pulled back from the elimination rounds of the Eastbourne International on Friday in light of spine damage, putting in question her cooperation at Wimbledon.
The seventh-positioned Konta was to play Karolina Pliskova, who now gets a bye to the last.
The other elimination round is between Caroline Wozniacki and Heather Watson.
“We made the decision based on the fact I’m still quite sore through my thoracic spine,” the British player said. “Next week is Wimbledon but I make decisions for my health.
“I didn’t sleep too well but I heard that’s normal. It just didn’t feel quite right. The most important thing is I rest well for the next 24 hours and then we’ll see.”
The 6th seeded Wozniacki played through stomach damage to beat Heather Watson 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, remaining on course for a moment title on England’s south drift after a win in 2009.
Konta is seeded No. 6 at Wimbledon. She was attracted to play Su-Wei Hsieh in the first round on Monday.
