Newcastle United was the center of attention in the Premier League match, the highest caste of the English League, on Sunday (24/9/2023). During a visit to the Bramall Lane stadium, the team nicknamed The Magpies crushed hosts Sheffield United with a landslide score of 8-0.
In this action-packed match, Newcastle United led 3-0 at half-time thanks to a superb cross from their captain, Kieran Trippier. Paul Heckingbottom’s Sheffield United faced a tough task in the second half. They couldn’t stop the flow of attacks by Eddie Howe’s troops. As a result, Newcastle managed to score five additional goals to complete the goal party while also giving Sheffield a nightmare.
Newcastle’s eight goals were scored by eight different players, namely Sean Longstaff (21′), Dan Burn (31′), Sven Botman (35′), Calum Wilson (56′), Anthony Gordon (61′), Bruno Guimaraes (68′) , and Alexander Isak (87′). The Magpies continued their impressive performance this season as they also crushed Aston Villa 5-1.

- Newcastle have not scored eight goals or more in a Premier League match since 19 September 1999 when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 (at home). At that time Alan Shearer scored five goals.
- Newcastle is the third team to score eight or more goals in an away game in the Premier League era, after Manchester United (1-8 vs. Nottingham Forest in 1000 and Leicester City (0-9 vs. Southampton in 2019).
- Kieran Trippier is the fourth player from Newcastle to make three assists in one Premier League match after Andy Cole, Moussa Sissoko and Allan Saint-Maximin.
- This is the worst defeat Sheffield United has received in a Premier League match.
But even though the result leaves Paul Heckingbottom‘s side rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, history suggests that they might not be doomed to relegation.
Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom said his team needed to learn from the defeat. “It’s the nature of the performance that we’re upset about… We can’t afford to put ourselves behind in that fashion if we want to compete,” Heckingbottom said.
