Jenson Button on Who He Rates as the Best Driver Behind Lewis Hamilton

Juan Manuel Fangio is probably the best driver on the grid right now. Some might say that the Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton is, but it’s debatable.

Hamilton is someone people call as a smooth driver. In 2007, he won four races and nearly stole the title from his more experienced rivals, Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso.

Speaking to Sky Sports, former Formula 1 champion, Jenson Button said he always find it so difficult when comparing who is the greatest driver ever.

“I’ve struggled to get less than six of the greatest F1 drivers, and it’s going to be the six while I’ve been racing because it’s the only way I can really judge them because I’ve been on the track with them,” Button said.

“I always find it difficult comparing someone like Juan Manuel [Fangio] to someone like Lewis [Hamilton]. They’re decades apart, and it’s a completely different sport.

“I’d stick Lewis in there. And Fernando Alonso. I’ve been team-mates with both of them and they have immense talent, in very different ways.” Button added.

Button replaced Fernando Alonso for the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix, after former his team-mate Alonso to complete Indianapolis 500 which was held on the same day.

When asked who was the best driver behind Hamilton in last season, Button said Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen were the same level as the British icon.

“Sebastian Vettel, because doing four on the bounce was a big deal. He’s struggling a bit now, and has made silly mistakes, against a very competitive team-mate, but I think it’s going to make him a better driver in the future.” Button said.

“Then I have to say Max Verstpapen. I didn’t race with him for many years, but seeing his performances in tricky conditions like in Brazil 2016, that is just out of this world, staggering what he can do with a car.
