Jesse Lingard has spoken out about his “frustrating” final season with Manchester United, insisting that the team made him “false promises”.
“I don’t know what the problem was, whether it was politics or whatever. I still haven’t got an answer to this day,” Lingard said.
“I didn’t even ask. I’d rather that someone out of respect for me being there that long told me, ‘This is why you’re not playing,’ but I never got that.” Lingard added.
Lingard made a huge impact in the second half of the 2020-2021 season while on loan at West Ham, scoring nine and assisting five goals in 16 games. Lingard is determined to be trusted when he returns to Manchester United in the summer of 2021.
But under Solskjaer and Rangnick respectively, the 30-year-old midfielder is still unable to compete for the official position, scoring twice in 22 matches in all competitions, with 548 minutes on the pitch.
“It was false promises. I was training hard and I was sharp, I was ready to play. When you’re working hard in training and don’t play at the end of it, it’s very frustrating.” Lingard said.
Lingard joined United at the age of seven and said scoring his first goal for the club in 2015 was a dream come true. In total, he scored 35 goals in 232 appearances, winning an FA Cup, a League Cup, an English Super Cup and a Europa League.
Lingard joined rookie Nottingham Forest on a free form with a £219,000 per week after the end of his contract with The Red Devils.
“This is an opportunity to say goodbye (Nottingham Forest) because I never really got to. It was an interesting game, but we wanted to win. You can’t get too caught up in the emotions,” Lingard said.
