Jurgen Klinsmann has been sacked as the head coach of the USA. The decision comes in the wake of back to back defeats in the qualifying rounds for the FIFA World Cup 2018. The German was appointed the head coach back in 2011 after he enjoyed successes with the German national team uptill 2006. Klinsmann steered USA into the last 16 of the 2014 world cup and managed to finish above Portugal in the group.
However the recent results lead towards his undoing as the head coach when USA lost to Mexico and Costa Rica at home and away respectively (2-1 and 4-0). Although the qualification process has only just begun and there is still a long way to go, the US Soccer federation decided that they had seen enough
“”We remain confident we have quality players to help us advance to Russia 2018,” said US Soccer president Sunil Gulati. But the form and growth of the team up to this point left us convinced that we need to go in a different direction.” – US Soccer president Sunil Gulati
US currently resides bottom of their group with the likes of Honduaras and Panama.
“With the next qualifying match in late March, we have several months to refocus,” – Gulati.
“We need to determine the best way forward to ensure a successful journey to qualify for our eighth consecutive World Cup.”
Klinsmann received a lot of criticism for trying to bring the tiki taka styled football in the American team. Many critics believe that he didn’t have the quality of players to manage that kind of level or style with which he had so much success previously with Germany. This lead to a low confidence amongst the players and eventually his undoing.
Reports suggest Bruce Arena to succeed Klinsmann as the head coach
Reports point towards Bruce Arena to take over again as the US head coach. Bruce had previously managed USA between 1998 and 2006. He has also recently coached the LA Galaxy and knows American style of football very well.
Jurgen Klinsmann has been linked with a move to England after the entire Sam Allardyce fiasco left the position vacant. Maybe Klinsmann is the new face the English football needs at the moment?
