Virgil van Dijk is still a long-term option for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp said they may not have the 29-year-old defender availabele for Liverpool in April.
Van Dijk sustained a serious knee injury in October after a rash tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The central defender went under the knife and is currently rehabilitating in Dubai, where he occasionally shows hopeful images of his recovery.
“I don’t know where these things are coming from. No doctor told me there is a chance for Virgil to play in this season again.” Klopp said.
“I don’t want to say that is absolutely impossible but it is not likely. It is not likely so we don’t have to discuss these things really.” Klopp added.
The fact that the Reds have for the time being just left Van Dijk on the player list for the Premier League and the Champions League, fueled the hope that the man will return soon. This week the final list has to be passed on.
“If we have space on the squad list we will put them all on even when the medical people tell us there is no chance.” Klopp said.
“We put them on because we believe in miracles from time to time, but if there is no space then we have to consider these things and say the chances are not too big so we have to make a decision. But if they are on the list then it is only because we hope for nearly a miracle.” Klopp added.
The big question now is whether his European Championship will also be in a question. The Netherlands will play its first group match against Ukraine on June 13. In group D, the Orange also has to compete against Austria and North Macedonia.
Liverpool plan on renewing Van Dijk’s contract. They will appareantly make their offer to him soon.
