In an outstanding performance during the first Group C match of the 2023 U-17 World Cup, England U-17 National Team striker Justin Oboavwodou showcased his goal-scoring prowess with a remarkable brace in a 10-0 victory over the U-17 New Caledonia National Team. The Manchester-born player now harbors hopes that his stellar display in the tournament will capture the attention of Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola.
Oboavwodou, whose full name is Justin Oke Oboavwodou, found the back of the net in the 30th and 57th minutes of the match at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) on Saturday, November 11. Following this impressive performance, the 17-year-old striker expressed his aspirations to make an impact with The Citizens.
In a post-match interview with media outlets, including MNC Portal Indonesia (MPI), on Sunday, November 12, Oboavwodou shared his dreams of playing for Manchester City and emphasized the significance of the U-17 World Cup as a platform for young players to showcase their talents.
“Hopefully, the U-17 World Cup is a good place for young players to show their performances,” said Oboavwodou, expressing optimism about the tournament creating opportunities for him.
The aspiring striker is determined to catch the eye of Pep Guardiola, and he sees the U-17 World Cup as a pivotal moment to increase his chances of making appearances with the senior team. Drawing inspiration from the success of fellow Manchester City star Phil Foden, Oboavwodou aims to follow in Foden’s footsteps.
“And you can see that in Phil Foden. However, I am focused on the tournament with England and scoring as many goals as possible,” Oboavwodou stated, highlighting his commitment to making a significant impact in the tournament.
Phil Foden, a product of the Manchester City academy, played a crucial role in leading the England U-17 national team to victory in the 2017 U-17 World Cup in India. Oboavwodou now seeks to carve his own path and leave a lasting impression, with the ultimate goal of securing a place in Pep Guardiola’s squad at Manchester City.
