Juventus reportedly agreed to sanctions from UEFA. The team, also known as the Big Lady, will be banned from appearing in the 2023-2024 Conference League. Italian media, Corriere dello Sport, reports that Juventus will be willing to be banned from competing in European club events in the 2023-2024 season.
Juventus should have the right to play on the 2023-2024 Conference League stage, after Massimiliano Allegri’s men finished the Italian League last season in seventh place. However, as is well known, Juventus is being investigated by UEFA regarding the plusvalenza case, aka capital gains. The practice of plusvalenza is related to the club’s efforts to increase the value of player transfers to manipulate the financial balance.
Plusvalenza refers to an accounting term in Italy to describe the profit on the sale of assets. In particular, Plusvalenza is often used to explain the difference between the (higher) selling price and (lower) financing of a particular asset. In this case, Juventus are said to have engineered transfer values and financial accounting to circumvent Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
This is what caused Juventus to get a 10-point deduction in the 2022-2023 Italian League. The 10 point deduction penalty caused Juventus’ position to sag. Without these sanctions, Federico Chiesa et al will be able to finish in the top four and qualify for the 2023-2024 Champions League. Juventus are now said to be ready to accept the penalty of being banned from participating in the 2023-2024 Conference League.
When the case was opened in April last year, the Old Lady was found not guilty. However, prosecutor Giuseppe Chine asked the FIGC Court of Appeal to reopen the investigation against Juventus after finding new evidence by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Turin. Juventus was also found guilty of a financial violation case related to the transfer of players and was sentenced on Saturday (21/1/2022).
The white-and-black club is willing to give up its quota in the Conference League to Fiorentina, eighth place in the Italian League for 2022-2023. Juventus’ willingness to accept UEFA’s punishment this season is said to be a sacrifice so that the team is not hampered by similar sanctions next season.
