Former unified light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev pleaded guilty on Friday in a criminal case related to an alleged assault on a woman and her dog in 2018. The Russian will now find himself on probation for the next three years, according to report.
Kovalev is alleged to have punched Jamie Frontz, in Big Bear, Calif two years ago. The two met at a local evening party, before returning to Frontz’s cabin, where Kovalev would have committed acts of violence to her when she refused the boxer’s sexual advances.
Frontz alleged that the two started kissing, but pushed him away when the boxer got too aggressive. After Frontz withdrew, she said Kovalev punched him in the face and kicked his dog.
“When he punched me, my nose exploded, blood went everywhere. There was blood all over the cabin. All over the walls. All over the carpet. All over everything. I screamed. He just broke my nose.” Frontz told TMZ.
“I physically was so much pain that I have scars to this day all over my hands and my arms. I was literally scratching holes in my arms till they bled because what he had done to my neck and pinched something in there which felt like.” Frontz added.
Kovalev was arrested in June last year and charged with felony assault for the alleged incident. After tough negotiations, he came to an understanding with prosecutors and was sentenced to three years’ probation.
Instead, Kovalev pleaded guilty to misconduct, harsh and offensive language. Kovalev was also ordered to serve a two-day sentence in prison, but got credit in connection with his pre-trial detention.
On top of that, Kovalev will have to participate and complete an anger management program, and pay $ 220 for court fees. While the criminal case is now resolved, he is still being sued by Frontz in civil court.
