Bulgarian professional boxer Kubrat Pulev cancelled his fight ahead of IBF and WBA heavyweight title against Anthony Joshua in Cardiff next week due to shoulder injury.
According to Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn, Pulev was injured during his a training session. He added that IBF boxer Carlos Tarkam was standing ready to take over since the Joshua vs Pulev fight was announced couple months ago.
“I received a call from [promoter] Kalle Sauerland late afternoon to inform me that Pulev had injured his shoulder and may be ruled out of the fight, this was later confirmed by his doctor. IBF rules state that the mandatory will go to the next boxer in line, is Carlos Tarkam.” Hearn said.
“It was a difficult situation for Joshua as he meticulously prepared for Pulev’s style and physique. He will be opposed to completely different style with Tarkam. “This hasn’t happened in his career before but he is ready for all comers on Oct 28.” Hearn added.
Pulev had previously confirmed his decision through a social media. He said: “I am aware that the news of my injury and the subsequent cancellation of the fight between me and Anthony Joshua for the world title surprised you. It wasn’t easy for me to make that decision.”
“I know that in my position almost everyone would choose to get into the ring in Cardiff, despite everything, and collect a few million, anyone else but not me. In my life and in my world, it’s not all money I’ve learned that a man goes into battle to win.”
“I understand that despite the vicissitudes of life, a man should not cheat on his beliefs. Anthony Joshua has to defend world titles against a strong rival and I’m glad he already has one.” Pulev added.

Tarkam is the IBF’s number 3-ranked challenger for Joshua. He has a record of 35-3 and 27KOs during his fight in the ring. He won over Ivica Bacurin in his last fight on June 17 this year.
The 36-year-old boxer claimed that everything was ready for this super fight in front of 70,000 people at Principality Stadium and expected to win this one.
