Nick Kyrgios on Wednesday has complained to the chair umpire about the smell of marijuana during His second-round of US Open 2022 at Louis Armstrong court, in New York.
“You don’t want to remind anyone not to do it or anything? Obviously, I’m not going to complain about food smells. Obviously, not,” Kyrgios said.
“Yeah, people don’t know. I’m a heavy asthmatic. When I’m running side to side, I’m struggling to breathe, probably not something I want to be breathing in in between points,” Kyrgios added.
The 27-year-old man sparked controversy during the competition six years ago when he reacted to a Twitter follower and said that players on the tour are permitted to smoke marijuana.
Soon, a WADA spokesman understood it as well, stating that while it is illegal during competition, it is not prohibited outside of play.
In the second-round, the Australian ended the match on a high, scoring 7-6 (3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 over the Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi.
“I wasn’t going out there expecting him to not be good or something. But his level was really, really good. It was one of those matches where you kind of survive,” Kyrgios said.
“I am relatively happy with my form. It’s so stressful now because, every match I play, I’m expecting to play so good.
“I’ve got to probably lower the expectation of expecting to play like a Wimbledon final every time. I almost don’t know who I am any more, to be honest, because that’s not me.” he added.
Kyrgios on Sunday ended Daniil Medvedev’s US Open title defence with a four-set win in the fourth round. He will meet the Russian Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
Both men have locked horns twice before US Open 2022. The winner of the quarter-finals encounter will face either Casper Ruud or Matteo Berrettini in the semi-finals.
