Leclerc: Ferrari can’t dwell on Red Bull and Mercedes plans

Leclerc

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari Formula 1 driver, wants his team to focus on its success. He does not want the team to keep itself hung-up on its rivals, Mercedes and Red Bull, success.

Ferrari remained focused on the new era of regulations. It remained in mid-tier teams during 2020 and 2021. However, its focus on 2022 paid off this season with two season opening victories.

Leclerc managed to win first two races and it helped a 34-point lead at the top of drivers championship following first three races. Carlos Sainz efforts to pull a podium helped the team to stood 39 points clear in the constructors’ board.

Red Bull and Ferrari remain the major title contenders this season. Mercedes, last year title contender team, struggled to compete two these teams. However, the gap could shrink with the introduction of new up-gradations during the season.

Nonetheless, Leclerc want his team to remain focus on its own plans of performance and development. He does not want the team to dwell on the fear of its rivals.

“I don’t want to look too much at the others,” Leclerc said before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

“The approach that we’ve had the last two years, we couldn’t really focus on anyone else. Because we did such a step backward from 2019 to 2020 that we just wanted to be back at the top.

“By focusing on ourselves, we found much more value than just focusing on the others. And I think that is the approach that I want to keep this year.

“It is not looking too much about what Mercedes and Red Bull are doing. But focusing on ourselves. What are the weaknesses? Again, this has been a strength of ours in the last few years, to really identify our weaknesses and to work on them and to quickly fix them.

“That’s what we need to do this year. And then I’m pretty sure that if we do that successfully, then the results will come.”

Leclerc controlled the complete race leading from the pole position in Australia. He recorded his first F1 grand slam at Imola grand prix.

Leclerc reveals that the team had expected to face difficulties at few tracks. But he claims that the Ferrari has performed beyond expectation in few of them.

“We have a pretty strong car overall. But looking back at the first three races. I think in some races, we expected to be slower than what we actually were,” Leclerc said.

“So here, I think we expect the track to fit our car a little bit better.”
