Leicester City on Saturday have beaten Manchester City to win the Community Shield at Wembley. Subtitute Kelechi Iheanacho scored a 89th minute penalty after being fouled by Nathan Ake inside the box late in the game.
New £100m City signing Jack Grealish, came on in the second half, but couldn’t make an impact.
Leiceter manager Brendan Rodgers was proud of his men effort in a Community Shield victory and showdown seriously.
“There was a great feeling coming here today. Every Leicester player, fan, staff member coming here, it was a really special feeling. We wanted to take that into the game and keep that feeling going, and thankfully we’ve done that.” Rodgers said.
City manager Pep Guardiola had spoken before kick off about having little time to prepare for new season and with “half of the team” being out.
With Euro 2020 taking place over the summer, some the Citizens players have missed from the Community Shield match.
“It happened last season, we arrived late. Tomorrow seven or eight players arrive back. That’s why I guess at the beginning of the season we will try to get results without being at our best.” Guardiola said.
“Congratulations to Leicester. I am more than satisfied with how we played. Many things were really good, the young players were excellent. We got minutes for players so in general, many good things.” Guardiola added.
More silverware for Leicester after the Premier League title in 2016 and the FA Cup last season. The Foxes open the 2021/22 Premier League season against Wolves next weekend.
Meanwhile, City will travel to Tottenham Hotspur when the new season kicks off on the weekend of Agust 14.
