Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is included in the list of finalists for The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2020. Robert Lewandowski challenges Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the title of FIFA’s best player.
They got rid of eight other players who were nominated for the Best Men’s Player of FIFA 2020. Previously, FIFA announced 11 names of players who were then cut to three players before the winner was determined on December 17th, 2020.
The eight footballers are Thiago Alcantara, Kevin de Bruyne, Sadio Mane, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Sergio Ramos, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk. Bayern Munich coach, Hans Flick, also believes that Robert Lewandowski deserves to be named FIFA’s best player this year.
The award takes into account the achievements of the players during the period 20 July 2019 to 7 October 2020. During that time, Robert Lewandowski recorded 60 goals with 39 of them scored in the Bundesliga (the highest competition in the German League). Meanwhile, with the same timeframe, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 40 goals while Lionel Messi scored 32 goals.
Lewandowski’s achievements throughout 2020 have been more perfect with the achievement of treble winners (Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League). “This season he really deserves it,” said Hans Flick. “All of us at the club hope he will be voted player of the year because he really deserves the award. We can only wait and see how the voting results. However, once again, he really deserves it this season,” added Flick.
Robert Lewandowski even became the main player in the 2019-2020 Champions League. He brought Bayern Munich the champion and also won the achievement as the top scorer of the most elite club competition in Europe. The Polish passport player scored 15 goals. His record outperformed Cristiano Ronaldo who posted four goals and Lionel Messi with three goals.
For the record, Messi has won the most FIFA awards, namely 1 FIFA World Player of the Year, 4 FIFA Ballon D’Or, and 1 The Best FIFA Men’s Player. Moreover, Ronaldo positioned the next with 1 FIFA World Player of the Year, 2 FIFA Ballon D’Or, and 2 The Best FIFA Men’s Player. The selection criteria for the players of the year are sporting performance, as well as general conduct on and off the pitch. The votes are decided by media representatives, national team coaches, and national team captains.
