Leylah Annie Fernandez won the WTA tournament title for the first time in her career after beating Viktorija Golubic 6-1, 6-4 in the final of the Monterrey Open.
The Canadian national stated that he was trying to be as focused as possible so that he could execute his game plan and not think about the importance of the match.
“I don’t think it’s a final or anything. I’m just trying to think of that match as another match,” said Annie Fernandez after claiming the Monterrey Open title for the 2021 season.
The 18-year-old took 89 minutes to overthrow Swiss national Golubic in a match which pits two players who haven’t lost a set en route to this season’s Monterrey Open final.

The Canadian national won the first five games of the opening set with only a few obstacles from Golubic. The Swiss national ended up winning her first game, but the Canadian national easily took the first set.
Entering the second set, the game got more competitive before the 18-year-old beat Golubic for a 5-4 lead before finally closing the match.
“I had an incredible first set,” said Annie Fernandez. “In the second set, he started to find his game, made fewer mistakes and was a little more attacking.”
“I’m just trying to keep up with his game. I’m happy with the crucial moments towards the end of the game, I can stick with my game plan and the ball seems to come to me. I’m happy about that. “
The Canadian converted four of his six break points, while Golubic only converted one of five break points.
The 18-year-old lost in the previous final when she lost to British national Heather Watson at the Mexican Open in Acapulco. He used the emotions he felt from last season’s final defeat and turned it into fuel for the win at the Monterrey Open.
“It certainly helps a lot,” said Leylah Annie Fernandez.
However, he could not celebrate the victory for very long. He is expected to be in Florida to play at the Miami Open this week. He is scheduled to play the qualifying round against the Romanian national, Mihaela Buzarnescu on Monday (22/3) local time. Thanks to the victory at the Monterrey Open, Annie Fernandez will move up to the 69th rank in the world, while Golubic, who is in the second final of the season, is predicted to occupy the world number 81.
