Leylah Annie Fernandez lost in her first match at the Italian Open, Rome 2024 season against Ana Bogdan.
The world number 34 missed the opportunity to become the seeded player in the WTA level 1000 tournament, the Italian Open, which means she had to go through the first round before advancing to the next round.
This plan fell apart after the Canadian tennis player was unable to beat his opponent in the first round, Bogdan, who won with a convincing result 6-4, 6-1.

The Romanian tennis player started the match better after building a 2-0 lead. But the 2021 US Open runner up was able to catch up until the position was level at 2-2.
However, not long after that, Annie Fernandez lost her serve again and this time she was unable to respond by breaking Bogdan, which resulted in the Canadian losing the first set and she had to work extra hard if she wanted to recover.
Instead of recovering, the world number 34 quickly lost serve again and after that the same thing happened leaving him trailing by 1-4. He then created three break opportunities in the sixth game, but he was unable to capitalize on these opportunities.
After that, the Canadian tennis player was unable to find a way to turn things around and had to accept defeat from Bogdan.
While Leylah Annie Fernandez will now turn her attention to the French Open, Bogdan will prepare for his second round match at the Italian Open against the sixth seed and 2023 Wimbledon champion, Marketa Vondrousova. If the Romanian tennis player wins, he will have the opportunity to meet his compatriot Sorana Cirstea in the third round.
In other action, Camila Osorio and Wang Xinyu had to go through a fierce three-set match before entering the second round of the Italian Open.
Colombian tennis player, Osorio gave his best ability to beat Dutch tennis player, Arantxa Rus with 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and will be the opponent of world number 18, Madison Keys.
Meanwhile, Wang will duel against the 12th seed, Beatriz Haddad Maia, after the Chinese tennis player beat her compatriot, Yuan Yue, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
