Liverpool have officially announced Arne Slot as the new head coach to replace Juergen Klopp. Arne Slot agreed to a contract with Liverpool and took up the position starting June 1 2024.
Liverpool wrote this news via its official website on Monday (20/5/2024). “Liverpool announces that Arne Slot has agreed a deal to become the club’s new head coach and will officially take up the position on June 1 2024, subject to a work permit,” Liverpool wrote on their official website. “He will soon become Liverpool FC’s first head coach from the Netherlands, with his first pre-season as coach starting in July,” continued Liverpool via the official website.
Arne Slot replaces Juergen Klopp, who announced the news of his departure last January. The 45-year-old coach will arrive at Anfield after three very successful seasons with Feyenoord. Slot successfully led Feyenoord to win the league title in 2023. He was also named Best Manager of the Eredivisie on two occasions.
Before coaching Feyenoord, Slot sat on the coaching bench at AZ Alkmaar and was successful in bringing them to second place in the Eredivisie standings. Most recently, Slot helped the Rotterdam club achieve victory in the KNVB Cup last April by beating NEC Nijmegen 1-0 in the final round.
While playing in the world of football, Slot filled in as a midfielder for FC Zwolle, NAC Breda, Sparta Rotterdam and PEC Zwolle before finally hanging up his boots in 2013. On the other hand, Klopp also closed his coaching period at Liverpool sweetly after the final week of the 2023-2024 Premier League match against Wolves, Sunday (19/5/2024).
After the match against Wolves, Klopp, who was standing in the middle of the field, said his farewell words to Liverpool. In his final speech as Liverpool coach, Klopp led the chant “Arne Slot”. Klopp’s singing was immediately greeted by a mass chorus of supporters who filled Anfield. “Arne Slot, la la la… Arne Slot, la la la,” was Klopp’s chant.
On that occasion, Klopp also advised Liverpool supporters to welcome Slot like they welcomed Klopp in 2015. “Welcome the new manager like you welcomed me. You have had total support from day one. Keep believing. You push the team. I am one of you now,” said Klopp.
