Manchester City emerged as champions of the 2023/2024 Premier League after defeating West Ham with a score of 3-1 in the 38th match which was held at the Etihad Stadium, Sunday (19/5/2024).
Phil Foden became the hero of Man City’s victory by scoring two goals and one assist for Rodri’s goal. West Ham narrowed the gap thanks to Mohammed Kudus’s overhead goal.
Thanks to this result, Man City successfully ended the season sitting on the champion’s throne thanks to the acquisition of 91 points. City was two points ahead of Arsenal who at the same time beat Everton 2-1.
Meanwhile, this defeat did not have much impact on West Ham, who no longer had any interests. David Moyes’ men ended the season in ninth place with 52 points.
The game had only been running for two minutes, City had already succeeded in opening up the lead. Foden’s rocket shot successfully hit the West Ham goal guarded by Alphonse Areola.
City’s lead increased to 2-0 in the 18th minute, again through Foden’s action. This time he followed up Jeremy Doku’s assist with a first time shot which Areola failed to block.
Entering the second half, City still had not relaxed the pressure. As a result, Rodri succeeded in increasing the hosts’ lead in the 59th minute with a shot following Foden’s assist.
West Ham scored a goal through Tomas Soucek’s action in the 88th minute. However, VAR annulled this goal because handball occurred first. The 3-1 score for City’s victory lasted until the end of the match.
This title also further emphasizes Man City’s dominance in the Premier League. Pep Guardiola’s troops successfully became champions for the fourth time in a row.
Tight interference from Liverpool in the first two seasons and Arsenal in the last two seasons were still unable to stop City from making their extraordinary history.
Overall, this is the 10th league title in Man City’s history, or the eighth in the last 12 years.
Thanks to this success, Man City also set a record by becoming the first team in history to successfully become champions in four consecutive seasons in the highest caste of the English League, both when it was still called the First Division and the Premier League.
In the Premier League era which was held starting in 1992 itself, Manchester United, which incidentally was Man City’s neighbor, was still the most successful team, winning 13 championship titles.
Man United also dominated English football. However, at best the Red Devils were only able to win three consecutive seasons twice.
Pep Guardiola was also recorded as the first coach in history to win the Premier League four seasons in a row. A truly fantastic record.
Amazingly, Guardiola has brought Man City to the Premier League title six times in just the eight seasons he has managed City to date.
The two teams that have succeeded in breaking the dominance of Guardiola’s City in the last eight seasons are Chelsea in the 2016/2017 season and Liverpool in the 2019/2020 season.
