Former Chelsea player Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink thinks that Manchester United should let Cristiano Ronaldo leave this summer if he wants to, as doing so will reduce wage pressure and give the Red Devils more funds to spend on transfer deals.
Ronaldo has made it clear that he wants to leave this summer after United missed out on the Champions League last season.
“You do not want an unhappy player – especially a player of that calibre. You want him to be happy. If you are going to work with Ronaldo you know that you are going to build your team around him.” Hasselbaink said.
“But if he is not happy, on the amount of money that you pay, maybe use that for some other players and use it within the squad. You are not going to be able to replace him but you can make the team better in different places.
“I think if Ronaldo wants to go, then you let him go. He is at an age where maybe he can play one more year in the Champions League. So try and get as much money for him, sell him and try to build a squad and make the team stronger.” he added.
Ronaldo joined United from Juventus on 31 Aug 2021. He had scored 18 goals in 30 matches for United in Premier League last season.
The Portuguese icon in a recent review insisted thathe’s still happy at United and he has no doubt to work alongside new manager.
“I was and still am very happy to be here. I know (ten Hag) did a fantastic job for Ajax and that he’s an experienced coach but we need to give him time and things need to change the way he wants.” Ronaldo said.
