Ruben Amorim asked his players to rise from the slump after Manchester United suffered consecutive defeats and headed for the Premier League relegation zone after losing 0-2 to Newcastle United at Old Trafford, Monday (12/30/2024) local time.
Man United closed 2024 with a defeat that could be said to be tragic. On matchday 19, Man United lost to The Magpies. The defeat was experienced at home. The bad result was a bad New Year’s gift for the Red Devils.
Not only that, the defeat also slowly brought Man United towards the Premier League relegation zone this season. The defeat to Newcastle was the third in a row in the Premier League, or the fourth in the last five matches.
Due to losing points from the match, Manchester Red is now only seven points away from Ipswich Town who is in 18th place in the standings, or the upper limit of the relegation zone.
Ruben Amorim hopes that Casemiro and his friends can rise, including when they play the next tougher match, which is a trip to Anfield, facing Liverpool.
“It’s very clear [United are dragged into the relegation battle] so we have to fight,” said Amorim as quoted by Express.
“This is a very difficult moment, one of the most difficult moments in Manchester United’s history and we have to face it honestly. We have to fight in the next match,” added Amorim.
Ruben Amorim admitted that it was difficult to handle the Red Devils who could not cope with Newcastle’s strength in the match.
“You can’t go back. We’ve only had four training sessions in total. I will continue to carry out my ideas until the end. It was very difficult for us. They are a better team and they started the match very strongly,” said Amorim.
It wasn’t just the club that experienced bad luck. One of the Red Devils’ new players also became the target of fans. It was Joshua Zirkzee who received unpleasant treatment from Man United fans.
Zirkzee started, but the 23-year-old was substituted even though the match had only started in the 33rd minute. Amorim replaced Zirkzee with Kobbie Mainoo.
Zirkzee was not on the bench after being substituted, but went into the dressing room. He appeared to be shedding tears because he was taunted by Man United fans.
