Marc Marquez commented on the collision incident involving his younger brother, Alex Marquez, and Pecco Bagnaia at the 2024 Aragon MotoGP, Sunday (2/9).
Alex Marquez and Pecco failed to finish after having an accident on the 18th lap. Both fell while competing for position at Turn 12.
Starting when Alex was about to go into turn 11, Bagnaia then took advantage of the moment by trying to overtake from the outside.
Alex, who was trying to maintain his position, then crashed into Bagnaia’s rear right side. Alex and Bagnaia’s motorbike seemed to be involved, both of them fell and landed in the gravel.
“I got back on track and rode the bike from the inside. My head was straight and that’s when I felt contact and kept going,” said Alex Marquez.
“I couldn’t do anything, just try to see where the wall was because we slipped and headed towards it,” added Alex
Luckily both of them survived serious injuries. However, this accident clearly harmed Bagnaia, who was catching up on points from his rival Jorge Martin.
Marc Marquez, who finished as champion of the 2024 Aragaon MotoGP, defended his younger brother. He assessed that Alex was on track and did not expect to be overtaken by his potential partner, Bagnaia.
“I saw him and I thought Alex was wide. He was on the right track, but when you come to that corner, he didn’t expect Pecco to be there,” said Marquez.
“Pecco is optimistic about overtaking him from the outside, trying to use that clean track because if you go out on a dirty track, everything will be more risky,” Marquez added.
The racer from Spain considered that the crash experienced by Alex and Pecco was an unlucky situation that other racers could experience.
“It was a very unlucky situation. I hope they are both okay,” said Marc Marquez.
This accident left Bagnaia 23 points behind Martin at the top of the 2024 MotoGP standings. Previously, Bagnaia was five points ahead ahead of the race at the weekend.
