Marketa Vondrousova, by winning Wimbledon in 2023, became the first married woman to win the Grand Slam title since Chris Evert.
The 24-year-old entered Wimbledon this season unseeded and won the Grand Slam title by defeating sixth seed Ons Jabeur in straight sets. On her way to the final, she also defeated Peyton Stearns, Veronika Kudermetova, Donna Vekic, Marie Bouzkova, Jessica Pegula and Elina Svitolina.
In addition, the Czech national became the first unseeded woman to win the Wimbledon singles title since the introduction of the WTA rankings. She is also the first married woman to win the Grand Slam title since Chris Evert in 1981 and the sixth woman overall.

During the press conference, the Czech tennis player was asked about her husband’s presence and she stated that the day after the final was their first wedding anniversary and the tennis player’s victory was a gift for her husband’s affection.
“It’s amazing, tomorrow is our first wedding anniversary so here’s a present for him,” Vondrousova exclaimed.
“I think it all sinks in. This is unbelievable. It was a very tough match and I was so nervous before. I just feel so grateful and proud of myself.”
The 24-year-old added that he was relieved after the bout as he almost ran out of breath during the match point opportunity.
“I mean, I feel relieved. Because I was ahead with 40/0 I could barely catch my breath. It feels like everything is in you. I mean I just feel really excited that I’m staying focused and I’m just trying to make it stick together. In some moments really heavy. I thought it was an amazing match. We had some impressive rallies. He’s an amazing tennis player. He’s an amazing individual. That’s also a pretty heavy part. We know each other very well,” said Vondrousova.
The Czech national’s victory over Jabeur in the Wimbledon final was her third victory over the Tunisian national this season. Now, he also excels in their head to head with 4-3.
This season’s Wimbledon title is Vondrousova’s second singles title since she won her first career title in Switzerland in the 2017 season. Thanks to that win, she has also experienced a significant ranking increase by breaking into the top 10 for the first time in her career.
