Marketa Vondrousova became the first reigning Wimbledon women’s champion in 30 years to bow out in the first round when she lost to world number 83 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

The Spaniard beat the sixth-ranked Czech Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 6-2, who last year became the first unseeded woman to win the title at the All England Club.

German legend Steffi Graf became the last defending champion to lose in the opening round, when she was defeated by Lori McNeil in 1994.

Bouzas Maneiro has never beaten a player ranked in the top 40, while his only other grasscourt match this year was a first-round loss at a low-key tournament in Italy.

“I think this is one of the most important moments in my life and career,” said Bouzas Maneiro, quoted by AFP, Wednesday.

“He is one of the best players in the world so there is no pressure for me. And I can just enjoy the moment and play freely.”

“I was really surprised with myself. Then I was a little nervous at first but the atmosphere was so fun that I felt more comfortable. I felt like I was at home,” said the 21-year-old tennis player.

Bouzas Maneiro will face Spanish compatriot Cristina Bucsa for a place in the last 32.

Marketa Vondrousova arrived in London in doubt after injuring her right hip in a fall at the Berlin grasscourt tournament last month.
