Max Verstappen had a fantastic season with Red Bull last year. This achievement has impressed many people around Formula 1. He became the youngest ever Grand Prix winner in his inaugural season with the team in 2016.

The Dutch driver finished the 2019 season in third place in the championship with 278 points, the best result of his career thus far. He claimed three race victories, nine podium finishes, two pole positions and three fastest laps.

Speaking to media, Red Bull’s advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko, said Max Verstappen was a youngster of great enthusiasm and high ideals.

“He was about 15 years old at the time. I usually talk to a driver for around 20 minutes so that I can get an idea of the personality and the whole structure.” Marko said.

“But I sat with Max for an hour and a half. There was a very young body sitting there, but he had a spirit that was certainly three to five years ahead.” Marko added.

Varstappen’s reward for his fantastic 2019 campaign was a new contract, with Red Bull tying the 22-year-old down until 2023.

“I am really happy to have extended my partnership with Aston Martin Red Bull Racing. Red Bull believed in me and gave me the opportunity to start in Formula 1 which I have always been very grateful for.” Verstappen said.

Verstappen snuck into F1 at 17 just before the FIA raised its minimum age for F1 to 18 and Red Bull were criticised for picking a youngest driver.

“If someone is 15 years old and has only had one year in a formula category, that’s a daring step and also a not insignificant risk,” Marko said.

“I hope that the superlicence points system will be revised because there are a lot of drivers who have 40 points but not the potential to succeed in Formula 1 and there are a lot of youngsters who would have the speed but not the necessary points.” he added.
