Mason Mount’s name was mentioned as the culprit behind Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool in the 2021-2022 FA Cup final. Apart from failing to execute the last kick in the penalty shootout, it turned out that there were those who said Chelsea did not win because of Mount’s curse that never lifted the trophy when playing the final match at Wembley.
The Chelsea vs Liverpool match took place at Wembley Stadium, London, on Sunday (15/5/2022). After a 0-0 draw in normal time, Chelsea finally had to lose on penalties with a score of 5-6.
Since 2019, Mason has appeared six times in the finals held at Wembley. Interestingly, the 23-year-old player must always be content to get a runner-up position, aka never a champion when playing at the stadium in London.
Previously, Chelsea also had to lose in the FA Cup final in the 2019-2020 season from Arsenal 1-2. One year later, the Blues also failed to win after being beaten by Leicester City 0-1.
Both finals were also played at Wembley Stadium. Of course this proves that the stadium is quite haunted for Mason who continues to lose in the final.
Mason also defended Chelsea against Liverpool in the 2021-2022 English League Cup last February. Competing at Wembley Stadium, Chelsea again had to swallow a dramatic defeat through the penalty shootout.
In 2019, Mason also briefly defended Derby County in the 2019 English League Cup play-off final. Facing Aston Villa at that time, Mason Mount was also only able to bring his team to runner-up.
Interestingly, the curse did not only take place at the club level, Mount also had a bitter experience while defending the England national team at the 2020 European Cup when The Three Lions made it to the final round.
Faced with Italy at Wembley, England had to swallow a painful defeat through a penalty shootout. All these results are proof that Wembley is a haunted place for Mason Mount.
Moreover, Mount became the last Chelsea player to fail to enter the ball in Liverpool’s penalty shootout. So, it seems legitimate if Mount is called the culprit of Chelsea’s failure to win the 2021-2022 FA Cup.
