The FIA has decided to introduce wider front and rear wings in 2019 to make it easier for Formula 1 pilots in the wake of another racing car.
But after this first race of the year in Australia, the first drivers who gave their opinion on the introduction of the new aero rules are not satisfied and consider that it is still difficult to follow another car.
Asked at the arrival of the Australian Grand Prix, the Red Bulls’ Max Verstappen says he saw no difference in the race when he was behind the Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, while he still appreciated the effect of the DRS more important this year.
“It was very difficult to follow the cars. I had to give everything for a complete turn.” Verstappen said.
“It’s even more difficult with the softer tires, because as soon as you get closer [to the front car], the tires overheat. That’s why I had to keep some distance.” Verstappen added.
Verstappen finished at third position at the Australian GP. The Dutch managed to get closer to Vettel’s car at the end of the race and was able to take advantage of the DRS, which works much better this year due to the larger size of the rear fins on the single-seater.
“I am very happy for the Team and also for Honda to finish on the podium today. Since we started working together it has been amazing and I am really enjoying the partnership, so this is a well-deserved third place for all of us.” Verstappen said.

“To be able to challenge Lewis at the end of the race and overtake Seb on-track, which around here is very difficult, is very positive. We had a little advantage with the tyres but it was satisfying to pressure Lewis even though I couldn’t get quite close enough to overtake him.
“Fortunately, the effects of the DRS this year are very important, and this weekend, we were also strong in the straight line. In this way we can fight.
“Vettel closed the door for me at the first corner, but I knew that coming out of the corner I could use my DRS and pass it before turn 3 out.” he added.
