Lacking two more trophies, Lionel Messi has officially become the most successful footballer in terms of collecting titles with the team he defends. The latest achievement that he obtained was from the World Cup event with the Argentina national team.
Recently, Messi led the Argentine national team to win the 2022 World Cup after defeating France in the final match at the Lusail Iconic Stadium, Lusail, Qatar, Sunday (18/12/2022). Team Tango beat Les Bleus on penalties 4-2 after a 120-minute draw.
In addition, Messi scored two of Argentina’s three goals in the 2022 World Cup final. La Pulga also successfully carried out his duties as a penalty taker. It was the third World Cup title for Argentina after 1978 and 1986.
Argentina’s success at the World Cup also added to Lionel Messi’s trophy collection. Quoted from Transfermarkt, Messi has so far collected 42 championship trophies with the team he defends.
Messi won these trophies while playing with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), and of course the Argentina national team. Barcelona is Messi’s favorite place to mine the trophies. He has won 35 trophies at the Catalan club, including 10 LaLiga titles and four Champions Leagues.
Speaking of trophy collections, Messi is now only one away from Dani Alves, who currently holds the status of the most successful footballer. Dani Alves has won 43 titles with the clubs he has defended, including Barcelona, as well as the Brazilian national team. The most title he won is Spanish Champions (6 times) with Barcelona. Yet, he has not won any World Cup trophy with the team he defended.
That is, Messi only needs two more trophies to surpass Dani Alves and become the most successful player in matters of winning the title. Messi’s chances of passing Dani Alves’ achievements are quite open. Moreover, his current club, PSG, is still circulating in several competitions this season. PSG are currently at the top of the 2022-2023 French League standings and have reached the last 16 of the Champions League. Les Parisiens – nicknamed PSG – are also still playing in the Coupe de France, aka the French Cup.
