Alvaro Morata scored twice to help Atletico Madrid beat city rivals Real Madrid in a 3-1 derby win on Monday.
Morata opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a header using Samuel Lino’s cross and Antoine Griezmann increased their lead with another header in the 18th minute, using Saul Niguez’s cross.
Real’s Toni Kroos scored in the 35th minute but Morata scored Atletico’s third in the first minute of the second half, again tapping in Saul Niguez’s cross.
With one game remaining, Atletico has moved up to fifth in the LaLiga standings with 10 points, while Real Madrid is now third with 15 points, one point behind Barcelona and Girona.
Diego Simeone’s Atletico dominated proceedings for most of the match and spent the final minutes passing the ball to each other sideways as their fans chanted “Ole, ole, ole” in a thunderous show of support.
After Morata scored the opener, teammate Jose Maria Gimenez squandered a golden opportunity in the 10th minute, missing a close-range header from a corner sent in by Griezmann, who headed home the second goal eight minutes later.
Midfielder Eduardo Camavinga had Real’s first chance in the 30th minute, with a curling shot from distance that was deflected for a corner.
Goalkeeper Jan Oblak denied Federico Valverde’s first attack from a corner and initiated a rapid counter-attack that almost ended in Atletico’s third goal, with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga making a brilliant one-handed save against Saul.
Kroos then made it 2-1 before Camavinga had a goal disallowed before half-time for offside.
Real struggled to create another chance after Morata’s second goal in the opening moments of the second half.
“Very happy for everyone who came here today and gave this incredible support,” Morata told DAZN.
“I said a few days ago, the fans will play the most important role. That’s how it happened. It’s an incredible atmosphere.”
