All the Moroccan national team players united in a prostration of gratitude after humiliating Brazil 2-1. The team nicknamed The Lion of Atlas created another surprise on Sunday (26/3/2023).
The Moroccan national team hosted Brazil at the Grand Stade de Tanger for the FIFA Matchday match in March 2023. Walid Reragui’s team invited one of the strongest teams in the world, Brazil.
Despite losing strength on paper, Morocco is not inferior to Brazil. They successfully scored the first goal through Sofiane Boufal when the game rolled on for 29 minutes.
The 1-0 advantage lasted until halftime. Casemiro equalized in the 67th minute. Receiving Lucas Paqueta’s pass, Casemiro fired a long-range shot against Morocco. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou tries to catch him, but escapes and goes into his own net.
But Morocco restored the lead through Abdelhamid Sabiri 12 minutes later. Starting from Yahya Attiat-Allah’s cross, the ball was controlled by Walid Cheddira who then passed the ball to Sabiri. From close range, he fired a shot that hit the top of the Brazilian goal.
Brazil tried to equalize the score, but Morocco managed to maintain a 2-1 lead until the game was over.
The 2-1 score ended the match and the Moroccan national team players continued the tradition since the 2022 World Cup. They bowed together in unison, a sign of gratitude after winning an important victory over one of the strongest teams in the world.
Yes, this prostration of gratitude is something that Sofyan Amrabat and colleagues often did when performing in Qatar at the end of last year. At that time, they created a sensation by reaching the semifinals, the first African team to go that far in the world football championship.
Morocco created a sensation by eliminating strong teams throughout the tournament. Being in the same group as Croatia and Belgium, they succeeded in winning the group.
After sending Belgium home, Morocco beat Spain on penalties in the round of 16. Their sensation continued by beating Portugal 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
Unfortunately, France stopped their steps in the semifinals by winning 2-0. In the third place match against Croatia, Morocco surrendered 1-2.
It was a sensational achievement, however. No doubt, this deserves gratitude which is reflected in the prostration of the players after the game.
Morocco will next play against Peru on Wednesday (29/3), while the match against Morocco is the only match that Brazil has played in the international break in March.
