Newport Grand Casino announces its closure date as Aug. 28

After having received final approval for its casino plan from the Planning Board in Tiverton, Rhode Island last fall, the Twin River Management Group on Monday announced that on August 28, 2018, it will shut down the Newport Grand Casino at 11 p.m. The Twin River Management Group, which also owns and operates the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, RI, purchased the Newport Grand Casino in order to relocate the license to a new location after Newport residents failed to approve table games at that casino. According to the Providence Journal..

The gaming license for the casino hotel, which is being built less than a mile from the Massachusetts border near Fall River, will be transferred to the new Tiverton Casino Hotel, which will open on September 1, 2018, at 10am. Prior to the formal grand opening, practice days and training sessions will be held for employees at the new casino. The property will include an 84-room hotel, food, beverage, and entertainment outlets, fitness centre, meeting space and a 38,000 square foot casino with 32 gaming tables and as many as 1,000 electronic gaming machines. According to a previous announcement from Twin River…

The Tiverton Casino Hotel will feature a Trattoria Romano Italian restaurant, Pie Five Pizza, Mooyah Burgers, Dunkin’ Donuts and a Jacky’s Galaxie franchise. Regarding the new roundabout that was promised to the Town of Tiverton by the Twin River Management Group, it is nearing completion and will reportedly be ready prior to the opening of the new casino. While an October 1 target date for the casino opening was given previously, at the end of May the management company’s chairman, John E. Taylor Jr., reportedly announced that due to unexpected progress made by construction crews during the winter months, the Tiverton casino would open sooner than expected.

The Newport County town of Tiverton believes that it will see a minimum of $3 million collected annually in gambling revenue and an additional $1 million in taxes. The Newport Grand building opened as a jai alai fronton in June 1976, and 16 years later slots machines became the venue’s main attraction. In 2008, the building was renovated as a slots parlour.
