Al Hilal is said to be able to receive compensation funds from FIFA after the player, Neymar, suffered an injury while playing for the Brazilian national team. Neymar suffered an injury when Brazil was beaten by Uruguay with a score of 0-2 in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in the South American Zone on Wednesday (18/10/2023). At that time, Neymar had to be pulled off the field after fighting for the ball with Uruguayan player, Nicolas De La Cruz, in the 44th minute.
Neymar seemed to wince in pain when he fell. He was stretchered off the field crying after receiving treatment from the medical team. After an examination, Neymar was reported to have suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his left knee. The former Barcelona star also had to undergo a number of treatments to recover from the injury he suffered while playing for Brazil. Neymar will need six months to a year to recover from an ACL injury.
Al Hilal is also said to be able to receive compensation funds from FIFA because Neymar suffered an injury while defending Brazil in the competition under the umbrella of world football. FIFA does have a club protection program for players who are unable to compete in the team for more than 28 consecutive days due to injury on the international calendar.
“FIFA covers injuries for a maximum of one year and the amount of compensation is limited to 7.5 million euros,” said Carlezzo Advogados Partner and specialist in Sports Law, Eduardo Carlezzo. “The maximum amount paid per day when players cannot play is 20,548 thousand euros,” he said.
Carlezzo said that FIFA had indeed allocated funds worth 80 million euros for clubs in the “FIFA Club Protection Program”. The budget will be distributed to clubs whose players suffer injuries in matches with the national team on the FIFA calendar. “The total amount that the FIFA program will distribute annually to clubs in the event of an injury is 80 million euros, so any claims from Al Hilal must be accommodated using these parameters,” said Carlezzo.
Meanwhile, Neymar was actually just brought in by Al Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the 2023 summer transfer market. Neymar has only played five matches with Al Hilal, contributing one goal and three assists in all competitions.
