The Washington football team on Friday have released running back Adrian Peterson, which could mark the end of his NFL career, according to reports.
The NFL club made the announcement on their twitter account, thanking the 35-year-old for the two seasons he played in the US capital.
Peterson was not in much demand when Washington signed him in the summer of 2018 after a series of racing back injuries at training camp – most notably Derrius Guice’s torn ACL. He had suffered injuries and a trade the year before, rushing for 529 yards with New Orleans and Arizona in 10 games.
“It comes as a surprise. I didn’t feel I showed anything that would warrant being released. I definitely want to play.” Peterson said.
Peterson had rushing gains of 1,940 yards and scored 12 touchdowns in 2 seasons with the Washington team. He missed a game, as then head coach Jay Gruden left him out for the first match of the 2019 campaign.
“I did not see an indicator I would be released. Ultimately it came down to them knowing Bryce is coming back, and he’s looking good, looking healthy.” Peterson said.
“Barber is a younger guy as well who can contribute. At one point, I wouldn’t have been surprised if all five of us made the team, with all of them except me being able to play special teams.
“I noticed that my role would be reduced. We got Gibson and J.D. and though we were all learning the same things, there are guys they selected during the draft and have in mind that they want to use for certain positions.” he added.
Peterson is now free to come to an agreement with another formation. If he ever finds a new job, 2020 would be 14 seasons on the Roger Goodell circuit.
