Nick Kyrgios Claims Winning Wimbledon Could Be Bad Motivation

Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios, after his best ever Grand Slam record, admits that at one point he was relieved that he didn’t win the 2022 Wimbledon title.

The world number 40 took a one-set lead against first seed Novak Djokovic before losing by four sets in the final. He put in quite a convincing performance throughout the final but admits that opponents always excel when faced with crucial moments.

At a press conference, the Australian admitted that not winning the Wimbledon title had also been a blessing in disguise for him. He explained that he would find it more difficult to be motivated when playing a lower-level tournament after winning a Grand Slam title. Unlike his fellow tennis players, he only travels to tournaments for about four months of the season because he wants to be at home with his family and friends.

“I feel if I win this time I will struggle with my motivation. I’ve said all my life that winning Wimbledon is an achievement I want to achieve,” Kyrgios said.

“It took me 10 seasons, almost 10 seasons of his career to finally get to the point of playing for the Grand Slam title and just a little bit more. I feel like if I won that Grand Slam I think I’d be a little bit lacking motivation, to be honest. Going back to other tournaments, like level 250 tournaments and stuff, I’d be really struggling.”

In London, the Australian scored wins over fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, Brandon Nakashima and Cristian Garin. He was due to face second seed Rafael Nadal in the semifinals, but the Spaniard was forced to withdraw due to injury.

“I think not playing the semi-finals might have affected me a bit, but I only think about playing the final all the time,” Nick Kyrgios continued.

“I think I handled myself well this time. So I came on the pitch and I did what I had to do strategically to give myself chances. I’m just a little bit behind and I’m happy with that.”

Prior to meeting in the Wimbledon final, the Australian had beaten Djokovic twice in the 2017 season. Now the question is what does the future hold for one of the most unpredictable players?

The 2022 Wimbledon season will be Kyrgios’ 30th Grand Slam to date.
