Olympics are just 5 months away and only less than half the tickets are sold. The 2016 Olympics will held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The organizers are freaking but, the IOC president feels that the tickets will be picked up by the locals at last moment.
On one side, where the organizers are assuring people over venue delays, Zika outbreak, doping legislation, metro construction, etc, Mario Andrada, the spokesperson of Rio organizing committee stated that on 47% of tickets have been sold. The revenue so far is about 74% of the target, which is $194 million. The tickets for the foreign market, opening ceremony and “premier events” are sold out. The domestic sale is lacking behind. The organizers are now planning to increase the accessibility over the tickets by planning e-ticket sale.
Talking about the 2012 London Olympics, out of 8.5 million, 8.2 million tickets were sold. They earned about $1 billion by selling tickets for Olympics and Paralympics.
For the opening ceremony at the Rio Olympics, the ticket price range from 40 reals ($10) to 4,600 reals ($1,170). The average price is 70 reals.
The minimum monthly wage at Brazil is about 880 reals and unemployment rate is 10%. Thomas Bach, International Olympic Committee President, is absolutely okay with this pace. He believes that Brazilians will buy the tickets at the last moment.
The organizers submitted their progress report to IOC and got an operating budget $1.8 billion. It is the worst recession of Brazil since 1930. Brazil is facing a lot of crisis. Irrespective of such crisis, the organizing committee has done a remarkable work, said Bach.
As Zika virus is also one of the biggest concern in Brazil, the organizers are also keeping up with WHO. According to WHO, Zika would not harm the Olympics.
The Centres of Disease Control and Prevention has advised pregnant women to avoid going to Brazil and have asked the males to have safe sex after the trip and do not have sex during pregnancy.
The rooms of the athletes will have an AC and they will asked to keep the windows shut to keep away mosquitoes, said Andrada.
Rio aims at saving $5oo million in order to balance the budget, but Nuzman claims that this will not hamper the Olympics.
The venues are almost done, the track cycle venue will be done in late April, Velodrome delay will be checked, a subway extension between Copacabana and Ipanema beach will be completed, doping issues are being handled and polluted waterways will be checked.
