Jonatan Christie failed to qualify for the final after losing in 2 games to Weng Hong Yang 17-21, 18-21 in the semifinals of the 2024 China Open, Saturday night (21/9/2024).
Jonatan managed to lead 5-4 over Weng at the start of the first game. However, Weng’s captivating game seemed to trouble Jojo, Jonatan’s nickname.
From a losing situation, Weng, who had good ball placement and net play, was able to turn the tables to lead 11-7 at the interval.
Weng was even able to lead further from Jojo 17-11 after the interval. Jonatan responded by playing more aggressively.
As a result, Jonatan was able to cut the deficit to 17-20 even though he ended up losing 17-21 in the first game.
Weng showed his skills again. He made things difficult for Jonatan again with good play and ball placement.
This made Jonatan fall behind 9-11 to Weng at the interval. Jonatan was able to control the situation until he turned the tables to win 18-16.
However, Weng was able to turn things around to win 18-19. The next two points were secured by Weng who won 21-18 over Jonatan.
Meanwhile, the men’s doubles also suffered the same fate. Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Daniel Marthin failed to advance to the final after losing to Malaysian representatives Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izuddin in a two-game match.
Fikri/Daniel lost in a two-game match with a score of 14-21, 22-24 to Goh/Nur in 43 minutes.
The clash between Fikri/Daniel vs Goh/Nur was fierce at the beginning of the first game. The score of both pairs was tied at 7-7.
This defeat forced the Indonesian representatives to go home because they no longer had any left in the China Open. Jonatan followed in the footsteps of the failures of Dejan Ferdinansyah/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Daniel Marthin.
