The mainstay defender and captain of the Dutch national team, Virgil Van Dijk named the striker he feared at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, the attacker is not Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, but Olivier Giroud.
Virgil Van Dijk does not need to doubt his quality in guarding the heart of his team’s defence. In fact, he can be called the best central defender in the world right now.
The Liverpool player has often met star strikers such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Sergio Aguero, and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, from a list of star names, he prefers Giroud as a player who is difficult to stop.
The 31-year-old believes that Giroud always manages to score goals in unpredictable ways. Van Dijk also gave his own label for the AC Milan striker.
“I recently gave an interview and I spoke about Olivier Giroud,” said Virgil Van Dijk, quoted by Sportskeeda, Saturday (11/19/2022).
He’s probably not the best player I’ve played against because I’ve played against Lionel Messi, Mbappe, Aguero. Those guys are very good, but Giroud, he always manages to score on several occasions.
“So I will say again that he is the Bogeyman. That’s how I label him.”
Apart from that, the Dutch national team is in Group A with Qatar, Ecuador and Senegal at the 2022 World Cup Qatar. The first match that Van Dijk and colleagues had to play was against Senegal at Al Thumama Stadium, Monday (11/21/2022).
