Arsenal on Tuesday secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, catapulting them to second place in the Premier League table. The win puts them just two points behind leaders Liverpool, who host Chelsea on Wednesday.
The Londoners dominated possession (75%) but struggled to create clear chances in a frustrating first half.
However, the second half saw a more composed and threatening Arsenal. Bukayo Saka tested goalkeeper Matt Turner with a powerful shot, then rattled the post just minutes later.
The breakthrough arrived in the 65th minute when Gabriel Jesus capitalised on a loose touch, his deflected shot finding the net thanks to an unfortunate intervention by the Forest keeper.
Jesus then turned provider, setting up Saka for a clinical finish to put Arsenal two ahead.
Nottingham Forest, spurred by the introduction of returning striker Taiwo Awoniyi, pulled one back late on.
Awoniyi’s strength troubled Arsenal’s defense, and he eventually found the net with a powerful strike in the 89th minute. He nearly grabbed an equaliser in stoppage time, but David Raya made a crucial save to preserve the Gunners’ win.
“That is pushing each other and being not happy conceding. I have to encourage that and promote it in the right way and a respectful way.” Arteta said.
“Sometimes after the game it is too emotional and too heated, but I love that the players are pushing each other and demanding excellence. Today we conceded a goal that is not at the level we want.” he added.
Arsenal have now won both their league games in 2024 and face a mouthwatering clash against league leaders Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. This tight battle for the Premier League title promises to be a thrilling one to watch.
