Novak Djokovic beats Roger Federer to win Cincinnati Masters title

Novak Djokovic on Sunday became the first player to win all nine of the ATP Masters 1000 series during his career after beating Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4 in the Cincinnati Masters final.

Before Sunday’s match, Federer had a perfect 7-0 career record in the Cincinnati final, including three wins over Djokovic.

For his part, Djokovic had lost five times in the final in Cincinnati. This time, he won after an 84-minute battle, when Federer was imprecise on a forehand. The 31-year-old tennis star raised his arms to the sky shouting. He then jumped into the air with a punch and handed his racket to a spectator.

“It’s obviously a very special moment to stand here with trophy in Cincinnati. I’ve played five finals before and most of those I’ve to this great man. Thank you Roger for letting me win once here!” Djokovic said after the match.

“It was a tough match for him. He probably didn’t feel his best but he’s a great champion and probably the best to over play the game. I want to thank my team and my family for their unconditional support.

“I’ve been a through a rollercoaster ride with injury and having surgery earlier this year and it seems a bit unreal to be back at this level, winning Wimbledon and now Cincinnati for the first time.” Djokovic added.

The Masters 1000 series was created in 1990. It became a real mission for Djokovic to become the first to win every tournament.

The Serbian now has a 24-22 career advantage against Federer. He is 3-1 against Federer in the finals of the major tournaments and 12-6 when a trophy is at stake.

“Congratulations Novak on making history today. Not just today, but on your whole career. To get to this point is an amazing achievement and you should be very proud, well done.” Federer said

“It’s been a great week. The rain was though on players but we had a great time. Getting the sunshine for the final was a wonderful treat.

“It’s nice to see this tournament grow, it’s one of my favourite to play. It’s been a treat to be back after missing out for two years, I hope to be back next year.” Federer added.
