Serbian tennis icon Novak Djokovic said he is ready to start fighting for the 2023 Australian Open title.
Djokovic starts the hunt for his tenth title in Melbourne, and in this way he can reach 22 Grand Slam trophies, which would tie Rafael Nadal for the Majors record.
The fifth-ranked player in the ATP does not hide the fact that this is undoubtedly one of his ambitions.
“Record Grand Slams? That’s why I continue to play tennis professionally, because I want to be the best, I want to win the biggest tournaments in the world.” Djokovic said.
“It’s not a secret. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to come back to Australia. I’m in good shape. I ended the year in the best possible way, beating big players, so I like my chances.” Djokovic added.
Djokovic will face Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena on Tuesday at Rod Laver Arena in his first-round matchup.
He had an impressive 2022 season during which he won Wimbledon and the ATP Finals, among other titles.
“I trained hard like anyone else. There are many young people who are hungry, who want to win.” Djokovic said.
“But the experience of having been in these circumstances helps to have the right focus and to do everything properly.”
“I know that when I’m healthy and playing at my best, I have a chance against anyone.” Djokovic added.
Djokovic received treatment during a practice match against Daniil Medvedev of Russia ahead of the 2023 Australian Open at Melbourne Park on January 11.
“I’ve been struggling a bit with this for the last seven days. Luckily it’s not much of a concern.” Djokovic said.
“So far I’ve been able to train, compete, play points, sets. So it’s a positive thing. Obviously, I’m being a little more cautious.”
“I don’t give it all in training, I’m conserving energy for next week. I hope it doesn’t cause me any problems.” he added.
